Task 1 – Option E

During a short stay in Brussels my friend and I visited a small quirky cinema which shows old silent movies accompanied by a live piano (Cinematek, http://www.cinematek.be/?node=17&event_id=100135802). When we came into the building there was a film and photography museum with interactive installation pieces, artefacts and placards of interesting information. This was all just in the entrance whilst you waited for your movie.

The films showing that night were 3 short Buster Keaton comedies, some of the subtitles were French and others were English so we relied a lot on the music to set the tone and aid our understanding of what was happening. We walked in to a small theatre with a modern piano at the front of the room:

A man walked in, took his seat, and the first reel began. It wasn’t clear whether he was playing from memory or improvising based on the action but he was not reading any material. The piano in the corner of my eye wasn’t remotely off putting. It was quite the opposite; the pianists enthusiasm was really delightful and it really enhanced the performance.
